Komarom, December 3 (TASR-correspondent) - The final section of a new cross-border bridge over the Danube River between Komarom, Hungary and Komarno (Nitra region) was fixed in place on Tuesday, TASR learnt on the same day.
[Komarno and Komarom used to form a single town on both banks of the Danube River in the Kingdom of Hungary. After the First World War and the Treaty of Trianon, the border of the newly created Czechoslovakia cut the town in half - ed. note].
The bridge, whose construction was officially launched on October 17, 2017 by then Slovak prime minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, should be handed over by May 30, 2020.
Peter Psenek - chief engineer of the construction work on behalf of the investor on the Slovak side, Slovak Road Administration (SSC) - noted that the bridge is more than 601.6 metres long, while the final section of the total of 36 has a length of 15 metres and weighs around 80 tonnes.
The bridge will connect main road no. 1 on the Hungarian side with state road 63 in Slovakia. In addition to two lanes for vehicles, it will have a cycle path and a path for pedestrians.
The intergovernmental agreement on constructing the bridge, which is being co-funded by EU funds, was signed in 2012.
There is currently only one road bridge connecting Komarno and Komarom. When the new bridge is completed, heavy lorries will be able to cross it, meaning that they'll no longer have to pass through the centres of the two towns.
