Groehling: KDH Proposals to Change Constitution Won't Help Quality of Life

Bratislava, July 17 (TASR) - Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) chairman Branislav Groehling doesn't understand the move made by the Christian Democrats (KDH), which have presented their proposals to amend the Slovak Constitution. Groehling considers it to be "jumping at the bait" of Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and tells the movement not to do so, asking how the proposals will help the quality of life of Slovak citizens. "Let's not turn the Constitution into a monument where you have to write something down so that it'll be there forever, because that doesn't help anyone," said the SaS chief at a press conference on Wednesday. According to Groehling, we don't need the KDH proposals in the Constitution, he sees no benefit in them. The opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) presented its own priorities for amending the Constitution on Wednesday. KDH is ready to present specific proposals resulting from its agenda as of September and to hold a discussion with political opponents as well. The movement wants to bolster freedom of conscience, including conscientious objection as well as to strengthen the right of parents to provide for the education and upbringing of their children in accordance with their religious, philosophical and pedagogical convictions. KDH will further propose the addition of a constitutional safeguard against the abuse of fast-track legislative procedures. It is also in favour of expanding the Prosecutor-General's Office to include special departments for fighting terrorism and corruption. am
