Sutaj Estok: Interior Ministry Runs Tender on New Road Camera Systems

Bratislava, August 28 (TASR) - The Interior Ministry has launched a tender for road camera systems worth about €64 million and due to be employed at road sections with highest number of traffic incidents, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok (Voice-SD) reported after a session of the Government on Wednesday. "The system is capable of establishing whether the driver was on the phone behind the wheel, had a safety seat-belt on, stopped at red lights or whether he or she was overtaking at places where it's not allowed. Hence, these will be camera systems of the 21st century," said Sutaj Estok. The commission also features systems of section speed measurements, set to be utilised mostly in tunnels. The new speed traps won't measure vehicle speed only at a single spot but across entire sections, and as such will be capable of eliminating behaviour of drivers who slow down only in front of a radar and subsequently pick up speed again. "If the public tender is successful, the new devices could be deployed by late 2025 at the very latest," stated Sutaj Estok. Individual bids in the tender are to be evaluated under criteria of not only price alone but also quality. mf/mcs
