Bratislava, August 29 (TASR) - Government ministers commemorated the legacy of the 1944 Slovak National Uprising (SNP) against Nazism on Thursday. "It was the blood of the fallen heroes of the SNP, with which our history is soaked. We must commemorate this. Thank also those who have survived the cruelty of the war, are still among us and whose bravery and patriotism have helped us join the ranks of the winning states," Agriculture Minister Richard Takac (Smer-SD) posted on a social network. "Our parents, grandparents and great-grand parents rose up in arms then to make it clear as rain that they don't want to live in a society without freedom," claimed Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD) in a video. Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenicky (Smer-SD) stated that the Slovaks refused to wait idly for the liberation and decided to join the fight for freedom. "The attempt to get rid of the fascist domination was an act of resistance against the aggressor - in the same way as the guerilla warfare in the Balkans or the uprising in Warsaw," he said. Environment Minister Tomas Taraba (SNS nominee) declared that Slovakia joined the victorious side of WW2 by virtue of the SNP and that is an aspect worthy of commemoration. mf/mcs
