Bratislava, October 6 (TASR) - Coffee consumption in Slovakia grew by over 22 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) to 3.3 kilograms (kg) per capita in 2023, with Slovaks drinking one cup of coffee per day on average, according to data on coffee imports, exports and consumption published by the Statistics Office on the occasion of International Coffee Day. "Coffee consumption in Slovakia has fluctuated at around 3 kg per capita for the past ten years. The average consumption per capita went above the level of 3 kg last year, following four years below that. The highest coffee consumption in Slovakia, namely 3.6 kg per capita, was posted in 2014. Meanwhile, the lowest amount, just 1.4 kg of coffee, was consumed by the Slovak population in 1990," said Vladimira Orgonova of the Statistics Office's communications department. According to Orgonova, Slovaks paid €5.63 for 250 grams of roasted coffee on average in the first eight months of this year, which is 40 cents more than last year. Ground coffee in the same packaging was available in Slovakia for €3.20 on average, a moderate decrease in price y-o-y. The price of a 100-gram pack of instant coffee has remained unchanged for the past two years, with consumers paying €3.60. Orgonova further said that 40,700 tonnes of coffee worth €254.2 million were imported into Slovakia last year. Coffee imports went down by almost 18 percent y-o-y, but they were still 6.5 percent higher than the five-year average. The largest volumes of coffee were imported into Slovakia from Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Brazil. "Meanwhile, Slovakia exported 24,000 tonnes of coffee worth €152 million last year. Coffee exports fell by 16 percent y-o-y and were more than 18 percent lower than the five-year average. Slovakia mainly exported coffee to Hungary, followed by Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania," said Orgonova. ko/df/am
