Trencin to Organise Commemoration Event for Murdered Patrons of LGBTQ Pub

Trencin/Bratislava, October 9 (TASR) - The city of Trencin will oreganise on Friday (October 11) a commemoration event for Juraj Vankulic and Matus Horvath, who were murdered two years ago in the Bratislava LGBTQ pub Teplaren, Trencin mayor Richard Rybnicek announced at a press conference on Wednesday. The city has embraced this move in response to the decision by Trencin's Ludovit Stur Secondary School to cancel its own commemoration event in the wake of an attack by far-right MEP Milan Mazurek (Republic). "This will be a commemoration, to which any of the students can come light up a candle or bring some picture. The whole event is going to be called the Day of Diversity. There will be a book to which guests can write a message to the heaven for the two murdered boys. In all likelihood, the event is going to be held at the Students Square, near the school's building," stated the mayor. The school event was cancelled after MEP Milan Mazurek accused a teacher of promoting LGBTQ ideology in the school, after she had asked students to come to classes in colorful clothes in show of their solidarity with the murdered victims. In addition, students were supposed to make posters and display them in the school's corridor. Mazurek accused the Education Ministry of promoting the LGBTQ ideology as well. In response, the ministry claimed that it doesn't enable the dissemination of any ideology in Slovak schools. Rybnicek pointed out that the commemoration event for murdered Vankulic and Horvath was held also in previous year, but it was an internal affair of the school and since no one knew about it, the event flew under the radar. Rybnicek added that he's saddened that the school management and many others left the students high and dry, with no one standing up for them. "This year, the school management has banned it due to statements by Mr. Mazurek, who needs to find some enemy to fight. Those young people, aged 11-18, are students of the prep school, they're not stupid," said Rybnicek. mf
