'Slovakia' Party: Coalition Hasn't Reduced Food Prices over One Year in Office

Bratislava, October 9 (TASR) - The governing coalition hasn't reduced food prices during its first year in office; the price of the same basket of food is 48 percent higher in the same supermarket chain compared to Poland, for example, stated MPs Julius Jakab, Michal Sipos and Rastislav Kratky at a briefing of the opposition 'Slovakia' party in Modra on Wednesday. "For the fifth time we went shopping in Slovakia and Poland in the same supermarket chain, the same foodstuffs, at the same time. The average price in Slovakia for buying exactly the same thing you buy in Poland in the same department store, in Slovakia you pay €76 and in Poland €51. And this government absolutely doesn't care about that," said Jakab. According to Jakab, the height of cynicism is the analysis on food prices, which the government took note of at last week's meeting. "In the analysis, they said that in the case of meat, the price in Slovakia is 20 percent lower compared to Poland. According to our purchase, the price of chicken legs in Slovakia is 31 percent higher than in Poland. Minced pork is 57 percent more expensive for Slovaks than for Poles," pointed out Jakab. Kratky added that the 'Slovakia' party had submitted a bill to Parliament that would prevent the same food from costing more in Slovakia than in neighbouring countries. "We proposed a law that says that the same chain selling the same product in Slovakia and in another neighbouring country can't give a higher price than the highest price in the neighbouring country," concluded the MP. am/mcs
