Bratislava, November 11 (TASR) - On the occasion of Veterans Day, November 11, the Slovak Towns and Villages Association (ZMOS) emphasised the importance of peaceful coexistence among nations, cooperation and the responsibility attached to both politicians and the public for the future, reported Zuzana Spacekova, central director of the ZMOS office.
ZMOS supports municipality initiatives that through their activities spread historical awareness and build bridges between past and present.
"The commemoration of the victims of the First World War is not just a time for reflecting on the past, but also a reminder of the values that we must protect and pass on to future generations," said ZMOS chairman Jozef Bozik. To mark this occasion, several municipalities are organising commemorative events to honour the victims of the war and to highlight the importance of peace and international cooperation.
The end of fighting in the First World War is commemorated around the world on November 11 as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, or Veterans Day, depending on the country. The four-year conflict, which remains one of the bloodiest in human history, ended in an armistice signed on November 11, 1918 in the dining car of the French General Staff, located in a forest near the northern town of Compiègne. At 11:11 a.m. on that day, the last salvo was fired, and the guns fell silent.
