Bratislava/Rome, November 14 (TASR) - On the first day of his visit to Italy on Wednesday, Environment Minister Tomas Taraba (an SNS nominee) met Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, whom he praised for his approach to protecting Europe's borders from illegal migrants.
The two ministers agreed on a coordinated approach between Slovakia and Italy in reviewing their commitments under the European Green Deal. Taraba invited Salvini to visit Slovakia.
Cooperation between Slovakia and Italy is expected to focus on environmental regulations, which, according to the Slovak ministry, are destroying Europe's competitiveness. "In this area, we agreed that our countries will not only exchange information closely, but will also coordinate our procedures on EU soil," said Taraba.
Referring to Salvini in the context of migration and his former position as Italy's interior minister, Taraba described him as "an excellent politician, not only of Italian but also of European significance".
Taraba also met representatives of Sogesid, a state-owned company specialising in eliminating environmental damage.
The Slovak minister is scheduled to hold talks with Italy's Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratino. They will jointly negotiate the preparation of a cooperation agreement on eliminating environmental damage.
"Italy has made significant progress in this area recently, and we aim to draw on its experience in addressing ecological damage in Slovakia," added Taraba.
