Bratislava, November 16 (TASR) - Bratislava ranked 15th out of 1,200 cities and regions worldwide for English proficiency, according to the EF English Proficiency Index 2024, an annual survey conducted by the Education First organisation.
Slovakia ranked 18th out of all the countries assessed and 16th in the European ranking. A total of 2.1 million people from 116 countries where English is not the first language participated in the survey.
"Thanks to their very high level of English proficiency, residents of the capital are able to use the appropriate language style in various conversations, easily read more comprehensive texts, and even conclude a contract with a native English speaker," said Monika Barborakova, country manager of Education First. Last year, the best English proficiency was achieved by people in eastern Slovakia, in particular inhabitants of Kosice.
The survey divided countries into five levels of English proficiency, with Slovakia placed in the second best group. However, compared to last year's results, Slovakia dropped by three points. Among the V4 countries, Poland and Hungary have better English proficiency than Slovakia, with the Czech Republic ranking 25th.
This year's ranking was topped by Netherlands again, followed by Norway and Singapore. In contrast, France, Italy and Russia have the lowest English proficiency in Europe, while in the rest of the world, people from Ivory Coast, Somalia and Yemen rank the lowest worldwide.
