Premier Fico to Attend Victory Day Celebrations in Moscow Next May

Bratislava, November 27 (TASR) - Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has accepted an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the official celebrations of the victory over Nazi Germany in WWII in Moscow on May 9, 2025, TASR has learnt from the Government Office's press department. "The Red Army and the peoples of the former Soviet Union played an indispensable role in the defeat of fascism and in securing victory in World War II. The people of Slovakia honour with reverence and respect all anniversaries and events related to the liberation of our territory by the Red Army in 1944 and 1945, as well as the assistance provided by the former Soviet Union to the Slovak National Uprising," said Fico. He stressed that the Slovak government is committed to preserving the legacy of the fight against fascism, upholding historical truth about the Second World War and recognising the role played by the Red Army. The premier added that this is why he intends to take on the patronage of several events in 2025, culminating in the celebration of victory over fascism in May. lin/df/zel
