Svinica, December 13 (TASR) - The Investment, Regional Development and Informatisation Ministry has signed a contract for the implementation of a project for the use of geothermal energy from the source near the villages of Svinica and Durkov for heating up the city of Kosice, State Secretary Michal Kalinak said on Friday, adding that the project has received support of €56.2 million from the Fair Transformation Fund, which is part of the EU funds from the Slovakia Programme.
The project is expected to be completed in July 2028, when the beneficiary, MH Teplarensky holding, completes the construction of the distribution station and the 15-kilometre-long heating pipeline between the geothermal source and the Kosice heating plant.
According to Kalinak, Kosice will become a pioneer in the use of one of the cleanest and most sustainable energy sources in Slovakia. The investment aims to exploit the potential of geothermal energy in the region, increasing the share of renewable sources in the central heating supply system in the city. The result should be more environmentally friendly, stable and affordable heating for households. According to the ministry, the project will significantly contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which will improve the air quality in Kosice region. Slovakia's dependence on fossil fuels will also be reduced.
