Bratislava, December 16 (TASR) - As of January 1, 2025, taxis will be allowed to operate on Slovak roads only with Slovak licence plates, said Transport Minister Jozef Raz (a Smer-SD nominee) in a video posted on a social network on Monday.
Taxi drivers who fail to comply with the regulation could face fines of between €100-15,000. In the case of repeated violations, the fine could climb to €50,000, or the taxi drivers could have their licences revoked.
"This means that the same conditions will apply to all cars. Cars that are registered in other countries do not have to go for emission and technical checks as often. This means that there has been some discrimination against Slovak taxi drivers who have to comply with these obligations. At the same time, we're bringing greater safety to all their customers. So, I believe that this measure will find understanding among the general public," said Raz.
According to the minister, the Transport Ministry is aware of hundreds of taxis on Slovak roads that are not registered in Slovakia and bear the registration numbers of other countries.
