St. Michael's Hospital in Bratislava Opens Excellence Centre in Neuromodulation

Bratislava, December 21 (TASR) - A new excellence centre in neuromodulation of the nervous system, intended for patients suffering from epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and chronic pain, has been opened at St. Michael's Hospital in Bratislava, Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok (Voice-SD), hospital director Ladislav Kuzela and doctors informed the media at a news conference earlier this week. "We'll be able to help patients suffering from diseases of different kinds. In the future, we also plan to cooperate with the National Institute of Children's Diseases, meaning that we won't only treat adults, but junior patients as well. This doesn't concern only patients from the sector [employees of the Interior and Defence Ministries - ed. note], we are open to the whole of Slovakia," said Kuzela. Excellence centres are unique workplaces based on multidisciplinary cooperation, combining clinical services, medical research and professional training. They are equipped with the latest technologies. Neurosurgeons, neurologists, algesiologists and experts in rehabilitation will work at the centre. According to Kuzela, a unique operation has already been carried out at the centre. Using a new method, a patient with a severely damaged spinal cord underwent surgery. The interior minister also praised the opening of the centre. "Today we managed to take an important step towards fulfilling the government manifesto in the area of ​​the Interior Ministry. Our ambition was to rebuild St. Michael's Hospital on the model of the Prague-based military hospital, to build excellence centres, and today we are here at the opening of the first one," stated Sutaj Estok. ko/df/am
