Ziga: I Can't See Alternative to Government, Opposition Doesn't Offer One

Bratislava, December 30 (TASR) - I see no alternative to the current governing coalition that could replace it, Parliamentary Vice-chair Peter Ziga (Voice-SD), who has been entrusted with the powers of the House chair, has said in an interview with TASR, describing the opposition as a group of people who don't present proposals and only criticise. Ziga doesn't think that the stability of the coalition is threatened, but he believes that some things should be discussed behind closed doors. "In the current situation, when the governing coalition has 79 MPs, occasionally fewer, it's also necessary to say what the alternative is. At the moment, I can't see an alternative on the political scene that could replace the ruling coalition," stated the acting House chair. According to him, society is strongly polarised, partly influenced by the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD). "You still have some 55 percent who support this governing coalition and 45 percent of the population who support the opposition. I can't even see that an early election would resolve the divided society, that it would unite it," said Ziga. "This government has no alternative at the moment because the opposition doesn't offer one," he opined. Opposition leaders, he said, haven't made any specific proposals, for example, in preparing the consolidation package. "I agree that some things should be communicated perhaps behind closed doors, and if a result is reached, then the public should be informed," he said, commenting on relations within the coalition. Ziga also stressed that 97-98 percent of the bills that were agreed upon by the coalition council in 2024 passed through Parliament, while some of them were even supported by the opposition. "I don't feel that this should be any threat to stability because when all government or MPs drafts that appear on the agenda of Parliament are discussed, they are mostly approved," he said. am/df
