KDH Misses Mention of Families in President's Speech, Praises Appeal to Gov't

Bratislava, January 1 (TASR) - The opposition Christian Democrats (KDH) missed a reference to the needs of families in President Peter Pellegrini's New Year's address as they will be affected this year by the burden of the consolidation package, which, according to the party, is poorly set. The Christian Democrats also point out that the country lacks a long-term vision on how to tackle national issues and make Slovakia a competitive country. KDH head Milan Majersky praised the head of state's effort to appeal to the government to focus on specific solutions for the people, pointing out that Pellegrini also clearly named the importance of our transatlantic anchoring and our relations within the European Union. Majersky drew attention to the fact that the president's speech focused mainly on the need for courage, stability, peace and understanding. The importance of the transatlantic anchoring and our relations within the European Union, he said, could also be seen as criticism of the so-called foreign affair policy oriented towards all four cardinal directions "which not only focuses outside these relations, but also deeply distorts them". "I appreciate the president's effort to appeal to the government not to conduct politics from election to election and not to be drowning in its own squabbles, but to focus on bringing specific solutions for the people. This is especially in social issues, health care, but also in the overall economic security," said the KDH chairman in a statement sent to TASR by the party's spokeswoman Lenka Kovar. am/mcs
