Taraba: Slovakia Must Urgently Shift Away from Landfilling

Bratislava, January 7 (TASR) - Slovakia needs to urgently shift away from landfilling, as new waste dumps aren't being opened and the existing ones are filling up, Environment Minister Tomas Taraba (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee) said in an interview with TASR, emphasising that populism in this area will cost the country dearly, adding that, according to him, at least three incinerators need to be built in Slovakia. Recently, lawmakers postponed the requirement for mechanical-biological treatment of waste before landfilling until 2027, which, according to Taraba, could result in massive fines from the European Union. "It was passed with a constitutional majority in parliament, and as a minister, I can only respect that. Because if something passes with a constitutional majority, who am I to change it? I spoke with several lawmakers who voted for it, and I believe they had no idea about the various consequences surrounding it," Taraba said. According to the minister, the MPs voted to postpone the introduction of the mechanical-biological treatment of waste obligation because they thought it would save money for local governments and people. "We have set those financial conditions so that they are absolutely sustainable. The Slovak Towns and Villages Association was fine with that. The price increase for this year would be about nine euros per citizen, which is an amount that is absolutely accepted, given that we would move forward in a fundamental way in waste management," stated the minister. At the same time, he stressed that if Slovakia doesn't handle waste sustainably, the industry will suffer. Taraba explained that companies need to provide proof of how their waste is managed. "And if Slovakia's only solution is landfilling, we will lose a huge competitive advantage compared to neighbouring countries," he concluded. lin
