Bratislava, January 7 (TASR) - The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) can agree with Progressive Slovakia (PS) on issues such as justice and the economy, but it has different views on some topics, such as the right to abortion, KDH chairman Milan Majersky has said in an interview with TASR.
Majersky's movement rejects the promotion of progressive ideology, and if PS were to include such value-based issues as a central part of its programme, the Christian Democrats would refuse to form part of a governing coalition with it.
Majersky emphasised that KDH has stood alongside other opposition leaders, including PS, in defence of justice, as it is a universal issue. "When the disgraceful amendment to the criminal codes was introduced, we were able to stand on a platform alongside other opposition parties to clearly show that what the governing coalition initiated, and which ultimately had to be corrected five times, was wrong, shameful and unfair to the people of Slovakia," he told TASR.
The KDH leader believes that Slovakia is still a conservative country and that the promotion of progressive values would not benefit society. "If these value-based issues were a central part of their programme and not set aside, we simply wouldn't join such a governing coalition, and we wouldn't support such a government," he said about PS. Among progressive values, he includes the right to abortion, the introduction of same-sex registered partnerships, the adoption of children by same-sex couples and the so-called right to self-determination based on one's inner feelings regarding gender.
