Children Commissioner: Knife Attack Reminder of How Fragile Children's Safety Is

Bratislava, January 16 (TASR) - The knife attack at the secondary grammar school in the town of Spisska Stara Ves (Presov region) is a painful reminder of how fragile the safety of our children is and highlights the urgent need for action, Commissioner for Children Jozef Miklosko posted on a social network on Thursday. "Schools must be safe places, places of trust and calm, where children can develop without any fear for their safety. I express my sincere condolences to the bereaved and my support to all those affected by this tragic event," stated Miklosko. As commissioner for children, he calls on all responsible actors to take immediate action together to improve safety in schools. "We need to focus on effective preventive measures while addressing children's mental health to prevent tragedies," stressed Miklosko. The victims of Thursday's attack at the secondary grammar school in Spisska Stara Ves are two women, aged 18 and 51. An 18-year-old woman who was taken to hospital in Poprad (Presov region) with moderately severe injuries. A 51-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were also treated at the scene for acute stress reaction. The police have already arrested an 18-year-old student suspected of committing the serious crime. am/mcs
