Bratislava/Kiev, January 17 (TASR) - A delegation of the opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party, including its leader Michal Simecka, is visiting Kiev, Simecka himself announced on a social network on Friday morning.
"Greetings to you from Kiev, where a strong delegation of PS politicians arrived today. Important negotiations are ahead of us," said Simecka, adding that the goal is to "reopen the door that Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has slammed shut with his aggressive attacks".
"Slovakia and Ukraine are close partners and can help each other a great deal," added the PS leader.
In addition to Simecka, the delegation features PS presidium member Ivan Korcok, MP and party vice-chair Tomas Valasek and MPs Beata Jurik and Lucia Plavakova, PS media department head Alena Kuisova has confirmed for the media.
Jurik should have originally travelled to Kiev with a trio of MPs - Jan Ferencak, Samuel Migal and Radomir Salitros (all Voice-SD) on Tuesday (January 14), but they postponed the trip for security reasons.
Premier Fico on Thursday (January 16) confirmed that a new date is currently being sought for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Originally, the Slovak premier proposed to the Ukrainian president that joint negotiations should be held in Slovakia near the state border with Ukraine. The subject should have been the situation regarding gas transit via Ukraine and bilateral Slovak-Ukrainian relations. In a brief statement on the X platform, Zelenskyy agreed to a meeting but invited Fico to Kiev instead.
