Stur210: Simkovicova: National Identity and Culture Deserve our Respect

Bratislava, January 19 (TASR) - The Culture Ministry will hounour the Year of Ludovit Stur with a year-long series of events, including exhibitions, academic conferences, cultural performances, and educational projects, to commemorate the 210th anniversary of the birth of Slovak poet Ludovit Stur and highlight his valuable contribution to the Slovak nation. Culture Minister Martina Simkovicova (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee) stressed the importance of this initiative. "Ludovit Stur teaches us that national identity and culture are values that deserve our respect and protection. The year 2025 will be an opportunity to strengthen our connection to our history and to Stur's legacy, which remains highly relevant today," the minister stated. Events throughout the year will commemorate Stur as the codifier of the Slovak language, a politician, philosopher and unwavering fighter for the rights of the Slovak people. "The aim of these events is also to inspire the current younger generation with a sense of pride in Slovak history and culture," said Simkovicova. The Year of Ludovit Stur has been celebrated every ten years since 1985 to mark the anniversary of the birth of the national figure, and this year it's the 210th anniversary. It always starts and ends on January 12th, the day of Stur's unfortunate death in Modra. This year marks 169 years since his death. lin
