Bratislava, January 22 (TASR) - Opposition KDH will submit an amendment to the Constitution at the March session of Parliament with an aim to anchor Slovakia's sovereignty in cultural and ethical issues in the Constitution, KDH representatives announced at a press conference on Wednesday.
The Christian Democrats intend to discuss this proposal with all parliamentary parties, but rule out any political "haggling" or quid pro quos.
"KDH will submit an amendment to the Constitution at March's parliamentary session, aiming to declare Slovakia's sovereignty in cultural and ethical issues. We will propose to have it anchored clearly that these issues are to be decided at home; so that the issues of family, the transition of man to woman, education, raising of children, the rights of parents regarding how their children are educated are declared things of extraordinary consequence that must have their clear place in the Constitution," said KDH vice-chair Viliam Karas. He added that KDH also intends to prevent what he sees as the exploitation of women for "womb rentals" or the so-called surrogate motherhood.
KDH believes that its initiative pursues the protection of human dignity.
At the same time, however, KDH rejected coordination with Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), who had presented proposals to change the Constitution in values-based issues on Tuesday (January 21) in Parliament. Fico wants to anchor in the Constitution the existence of only two genders, his vision for the state education programme and amend the adoption of children. KDH claimed that Fico only seeks to use these changes as a red herring, whereas for KDH the topic is the subject of consistent longstanding interest
