Bratislava, January 24 (TASR) - The opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party has launched a campaign called 'We won't allow it' about the need for Slovakia to remain in the European Union (EU), PS leader and MP Michal Simecka told a press conference on Friday, adding that his party is reacting to statements made by coalition representatives.
The campaign includes a public appeal to the government not to change in any way the anchoring of Slovakia's foreign policy. PS also plans to place billboards around the country, especially in localities with strong coalition support.
"Many coalition voters are appalled by Tibor Gaspar's (Smer-SD) words [concerning the possibility of Slovakia quitting the EU and NATO - ed. note] because they know that the future prosperity, security, sovereignty and freedom of Slovakia lies precisely in EU membership, and they don't want anyone to question this. They certainly don't want anyone to organise Slovakia's exit from the EU. ... Slovakia belongs to Europe. It should be a member of the EU now and in the future. This shouldn't be questioned," he stressed.
The campaign has several phases. It includes a public appeal to the cabinet not to change Slovakia's foreign policy orientation that has been signed by more than 60,000 people as of Friday. PS will also launch a campaign on social media and will continue to hold roadshows in the regions.
