Bratislava, January 29 (TASR) - Azerbaijani gas could reach Slovakia from Ukraine, and this gas transit should be discussed by Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) on Thursday at his working trip to Brussels, Ivan Korcok of the opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) party stated, adding that the issue of gas supplies could have been resolved long ago if the government had addressed it earlier.
"If the gas transit had been negotiated the way it is being negotiated now with the involvement of the European Commission, if we had looked for a solution where it has been clear since the beginning that it may be non-Russian gas, we could have really been spared this huge tension and we could have also been spared what the prime minister [Robert Fico (Smer-SD)] is doing very irresponsibly, when he is breaking relations with Ukraine," said Korcok.
The ex-foreign minister added that the possibility of transit of non-Russian gas to Slovakia was also supported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, according to Korcok, Fico is still interested in supplying Russian gas to Slovakia, which would deepen the dependence on Russia. "It is in the interest of the Slovak Republic if we are part of the European Union's joint efforts to get rid of our dependence on Russian gas, it will only be good for Slovakia and our economic interests and energy security," concluded Korcok.
