Fico's Meeting in Brussels on Halting Gas Transit Postponed to Monday

Bratislava, January 30 (TASR) - Thursday's meeting between Slovak Premier Robert Fico and European Commission representatives on halting the transit of Russian gas through Slovakia was postponed until Monday (February 3) due to the closure of Brussels airport airspace, due to technical reasons, which forced the Slovak government plane to return to Slovakia, TASR reports this based on the premier's post on Facebook. The premier stated that they didn't land in Brussels as they would have had to circle the airport for at least 90 minutes, meaning the Slovak delegation wouldn't have made it to the scheduled meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen. The meeting with Jorgensen was therefore rescheduled to Monday, when an informal meeting of the European Council will take place in Brussels. Fico will try to meet with European Commissioner for Democracy and the Rule of Law, Michael McGrath on Monday. "A dilemma arises as to whether a country can adopt a constitutional change based on which we'll argue that no EU act can take precedence over the Slovak Constitution," said the premier referring to the proposed constitutional change he presented on Monday (January 27). McGrath stressed on Wednesday (January 29) that European law takes precedence over the laws of individual member states. lin/mcs
