Bratislava, February 13 (TASR) - A fundamental issue that remains to be seen is what kind of role, if any, will the European Union play in the peacemaking process in Ukraine, President Peter Pellegrini declared on Thursday.
Pellegrini is slated to leave for Munich on Friday (February 14), where he will attend the 61th Munich Security Conference. World leaders are due to discuss trans-Atlantic ties, the international order and global security threats, including the war in Ukraine.
"What used to be multilateral policy has morphed into the hard pushing of national interests by superpowers, in the sense of 'take it or leave it'. The EU stands before an urgent challenge of how to approach Ukraine and under what terms will peace be agreed. I'd also like to familiarise myself closer with the vision of US policy with respect to US ties to Europe in the sphere of security and economic cooperation," noted the Slovak President.
According to public information, the conference is to be attended also by US Vice-president J.D. Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Because of this, Pellegrini trusts he will learn about their ideas on how to end the war in Ukraine in more granular detail.
The President's Office press department added that Pellegrini is slated to participate in several bilateral meetings: with European Council President Antonio Costa, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Council of Europe Secretary-general Alain Berset. However, the conference poses an opportunity to meet with several private sector actors as well, including representatives of Google, Meta, Airbus and Boston Consulting Group.
