Trnava/Velka Maca, February 21 (TASR) - Trnava self-governing region has revealed that it's in the final phase of a public tender to find a contractor to build a Freedom of Speech Memorial in Velka Maca (Trnava region), which will be located on the site of the home of murdered journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova. The tragedy happened seven years ago. "On this sad anniversary of the tragic event, I can announce that we're just about to sign the contract with the contractor. We estimate that the construction work will start in March of this year," said the region's chairman Jozef Viskupic. In 2021, Trnava announced a competition to design the memorial in which an expert jury selected the winning design titled 'Garden' by its creators - Benjamin Bradnansky, Vit Halada and Martin Piacek. Journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova were murdered on February 21, 2018 in their house in Velka Maca. The most probable motive according to the police was Kuciak's investigative journalistic work. Three convictions have resulted in the case, with the perpetrators of the murder Miroslav Marcek and Tomas Szabo serving 25 years in prison and Zoltan Andrusko 15 years. The trial in the case of the alleged masterminds of the murder has not yet been legally concluded. lin/df
