Bratislava, February 22 (TASR) - The capital city of Bratislava was visited by almost 1.2 million tourists last year, up by 3.2 percent from 2023, the Bratislava Tourist Board (BTV) reported on Monday, adding that Bratislava thus reached 85 percent of the record figure in 2019. According to data revealed by the Statistics Office, most visitors (67 percent) come to Bratislava from abroad. The number of overnights stays by foreign visitors grew by 4.6 percent in 2024, with the highest number of them coming from the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Austria and the United Kingdom. "A significant return of tourists from China was recorded last year, with the year-on-year (y-o-y) increase reaching 170 percent. The number of tourists coming from the USA rose by 12 percent, and those from Hungary by 10 percent. Conversely, the number of tourists from the Netherlands fell by 16 percent, as a result of which the country slipped from 12th to 15th place in terms of visitors to Bratislava," said BTB. The strongest tourist months last year were June, July and August. The biggest number of tourists (116,171) visited Bratislava in August. In the final quarter of 2024, the Slovak capital posted more than 13-percent y-o-y growth in the number of visitors. "In November, 18 percent more tourists visited Bratislava than in the same month of 2023. The autumn and advent season is very important for Bratislava, as there is increased interest in travelling to 'citybreak' destinations for culture, gastronomy, art, but also Christmas markets during this period," stated BTB, adding that many congresses were held in that quarter, which contributed to the increase in the number of visitors, too. ko/df/mf
