Geneva, February 26 (TASR) - Slovakia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Red Cross for 2025-2028, with Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanar and International Red Cross President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger confirming that cooperation will continue with their signatures during their meeting in Geneva on Tuesday.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ongoing 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, TASR learnt from the Foreign Affairs Ministry's communications department on Wednesday.
"Given the turbulent security situation in the world, with increasing erosion of international humanitarian law, our partnership and support for the Red Cross are extraordinarily important," stressed the head of Slovak diplomacy. He praised the Red Cross's activities in the most critical regions associated with enormous risks for humanitarian workers, who often put their own lives on the line there. According to him, Slovakia finds this unacceptable and strongly condemns the increasing number of attacks on humanitarian workers.
Blanar briefed Spoljaric Egger about the humanitarian aid that Slovakia has been providing to the civilian population of Ukraine, which, according to him, has been noticeable since the beginning of the war.
Concerning the conflict in the Middle East, he highlighted the role of the Red Cross in the prisoner exchange process and in efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
As part of his working trip to Geneva, Blanar visited the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) and delivered speeches at a session of the UN Human Rights Council and at the Conference on Disarmament.
