Bratislava, March 5 (TASR) - House Vice-chair and Slovak National Party (SNS) leader Andrej Danko expects Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) to veto aid for Ukraine at the EU summit slated for Thursday (March 6), SNS representatives declared at a press conference on Wednesday.
"There hasn't been much luck with changing governments in those strong [EU] states, which makes the position of Robert Fico together with [Hungarian Premier] Viktor Orban that much harder. As SNS chairman I support this government partly because the voice of Slovakia, but also that of Hungary and other states, will be heard in Brussels," said Danko. In his view, the EU is stagnating and needs the kind of leaders that are at the helm of Slovakia today.
An extraordinary EU summit will be convened in Brussels on Thursday to discuss the recent dramatic pivot in the United States' foreign policy on the war in Ukraine.
Prime Minister Fico disagrees with military and financial aid for Ukraine and will propose to include in the summit's conclusions an explicit demand for Ukraine to restore the transit of Russian gas or other gas across its land to Slovakia and beyond. Fico signalled that if Slovakia's proposal is rejected, passing the summit's conclusions might become significantly more complicated, as he might block financial and military aid for Ukraine.
