Bratislava, March 7 (TASR) - Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) achieved nothing for Slovakia's energy security at the extraordinary European Union summit on Thursday, stated opposition leader Michal Simecka and Ivan Korcok (PS) during a press conference on Friday, claiming that this was a result of Slovakia's isolation.
"What Robert Fico is going to sell as a victory today is just an embarrassing spectacle for the public, designed to create the illusion of a determined fighter in Brussels. In reality, the outcome of the summit is a disgrace, as the premier had to rely on 26 colleagues to give him a homework assignment to finally act," saod Korcok.
He and Simecka stressed that this is a consequence of Slovakia's isolation due to the government's foreign policy. "EU leaders simply don't want to stand behind a premier who has left the European table to side with the Russians and is dragging Slovakia away from the EU," stated Korcok. PS also criticised the government's other foreign policy moves.
An extraordinary EU summit on support for Ukraine and European defence took place in Brussels on Thursday (March 6). A text was successfully included in the final decisions calling for cooperation between the European Commission, Ukraine and Slovakia to find a solution to restore gas transit. After the summit, the premier stated that EU-member states recognised that the halt to gas transit through Ukraine "is a problem that threatens the entire EU."
