Zvolen, March 8 (TASR) - The Ludovit Stur Grammar School (GLS) in Zvolen (Banska Bystrica region) is over a hundred years old, but the Education Ministry bestowed the honorary name of Stur on it only in 1989, TASR was told by Lenka Stepanekova, spokeswoman for Banska Bystrica self-governing region, under whose remit the school comes.
The spokesperson added that the school has gone through several names and locations during its existence. It was founded in 1919 as the State Real School in Zvolen.
"During the Slovak National Uprising [in 1944], teaching was suspended, and the school building became the seat of the insurgents' military hospital, and after that a German military hospital," she stated, adding that following liberation it served Soviet and Romanian troops.
In 1993, GLS was the first secondary school in Slovakia to connect itself to the internet. In 2009, the school underwent major reconstruction work.
Approximately 12,100 students have left GLS in the more than hundred years of its existence. This school year, 543 pupils are attending it.
This year marks the 210th anniversary of the birth of Ludovit Stur, who was instrumental in the Slovak national awakening and the codification of the Slovak language.
