Liptovsky Mikulas, March 17 (TASR) - a completely new skatepark with an area of 860 square metres will be built on the site of a 24-year-old one in the town of Liptovsky Mikulas (Zilina region) at a cost of almost €600,000, TASR has learnt. Town mayor Jan Blchac ceremonially tapped the foundation stone on Monday with Investments Minister Richard Rasi (Voice-SD) and Investments, Regional Development and Informatisation State Secretary Michal Kalinak in attendance. "This skatepark was one of the first in Slovakia, and in a few months it will be one of the most modern in Slovakia, just so that our talents can develop here. The project is being built thanks to EU funds, which come under the remit of our ministry, but these are EU funds [whose use is] decided by the regions, towns and municipalities themselves. The town of Liptovsky Mikulas has decided to use almost €600,000 to build and reconstruct a completely new skatepark precisely because it considers this to be an important moment for developing leisure activities and sport in Liptovsky Mikulas," said Rasi. The skatepark was most recently reconstructed in 2015 as part of Slovak-Polish border cooperation. "There are new conditions today, and skateboarding has become an Olympic sport. Partly thanks to the modernisation of this area, we could one day see an athlete from Liptovsky Mikulas under the Olympic flag in this discipline, which will once again confirm our 'Town of Olympic Winners' title," said the town mayor. am/df
