Climate Coalition: Slovakia Among Last EU Countries Not to Have Submitted NECP

Bratislava, March 25 (TASR) - The Climate Coalition has pointed to the fact that Slovakia is lagging behind in preparing its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP).
The European Commission (EC) has already urged Slovakia to submit the plan. "Slovakia is among the last four EU countries that haven't yet submitted their NECP. We are therefore facing infringement from the EC, as well as random ill-considered projects, such as the Malinec hydro-electric plant, the Karpaty tunnel, or fossil heating," stated the Climate Coalition.
The Climate Coalition stressed that the NECP is to determine how Slovakia will use some €15 billion from EU climate protection funds by 2030. It added that the document is so late that the EC has initiated proceedings against Slovakia in this matter. The latest proposal submitted was insufficient and didn't meet the requirements for an effective solution to the climate crisis, stated the organisation.
According to Climate Coalition coordinator Dana Marekova, strategic plans are the basis for reducing emissions, saving energy, and introducing latest technologies, including renewable sources. The needs of population must be taken into account, with an emphasis on socially vulnerable groups, she said.
EU member states were supposed to submit the revision of the NECP to the Commission by 30 June, 2024.
