Bratislava, March 26 (TASR) - Slovak National Party (SNS) MPs will support Richard Rasi in the election of the parliamentary chair, stated SNS leader and House Vice-chair Andrej Danko before the vote on Wednesday.
Danko expects the election to go smoothly. It's scheduled for after 5 p.m. as part of a block of several personnel elections. According to Danko, the parliamentary head is to be elected first.
"There's no defiance here. This is a position based on values and the choice of Rasi is problem-free. We've offered our hand to Rasi, and SNS will express our support for him," Danko told a press conference.
Leader of the opposition 'Slovakia' party Igor Matovic earlier on Wednesday called on coalition MPs not to support Rasi in the election, claiming that he hasn't been able to handle his previous political posts.
Rasi was nominated by Voice-SD, which, according to the coalition agreement, is entitled to the post of parliamentary chair. Danko was also interested in the post in the past. It's been vacant since April 2024, when the then head of Parliament Peter Pellegrini won the presidential election. House Vice-chair Peter Ziga (Voice-SD) was entrusted with the management of Parliament in the interim. The election was postponed for months, as the coalition didn't firmly agree to support a single candidate.
Rasi returned to Parliament after leaving the Investment, Regional Development and Informatisation Ministry. He was replaced as minister by Samuel Migal (Independent) on the basis of coalition agreements.
