Medvedov/Narad, March 30 (TASR) - The process of culling the cattle at a farm in the village of Medvedov in the district of Dunajska Streda (Trnava region), which has been hit by foot-and-mouth disease, was completed on Saturday (March 29) and will be followed by cattle culling at a farm in Narad on Sunday, Maros Sykora of a company called "Nase farmy" (Our Farms), to whose portfolio the two farms belong, has told TASR.
The herd in Medvedov consisted of some 670 pieces of cattle before the outbreak of the disease, while there were some 100 pieces more on the farm in Narad. The animals in both affected farms underwent protective vaccination during a week in order to reduce spreading of the virus.
The presence of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed at livestock farms in four villages in southern Slovakia on Friday - Medvedov, Narad, Baka and Luc na Ostrove. The disease probably reached Slovakia from Hungary. It is a serious, highly contagious and febrile viral disease among livestock with significant economic impacts. The government has declared a state of emergency in response to the disease covering the entire territory of Slovakia.
