Bratislava, March 31 (TASR) - Slovakia supports the European Commission's (EC) intention to continue negotiations with the USA on tariffs on imported goods until the last moment, Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said in a phone call with EC President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday, adding that a trade war between the US and the whole world will harm both sides.
"I had a telephone consultation today with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The subject was the tariffs proposed by US President Donald Trump and foot-and-mouth disease in Slovakia," stated Fico. "I've informed the EC president that I intend to discuss with car manufacturers in Slovakia all alternatives for development and that I'll submit to the EC all the proposals that will emerge from these negotiations," added the prime minister.
Fico also discussed with the head of the European Commission the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic in Slovakia and the possible consequences for the Central European region. "We agreed to look together for ways to compensate for the losses. I thanked for the participation of EU experts on our territory, who confirmed that Slovakia is combating the disease professionally and in accordance with European legislation," added the prime minister.
