Bratislava, April 1 (TASR) - The information that Slovakia has the worst sustainability of public finances in the EU is only half-true because of equal importance is the fact that Slovakia made the greatest improvement within the entire EU in this indicator in 2024, Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenicky (Smer-SD) declared in Parliament on Tuesday. Kamenicky responded this way to the latest European Commission's Debt Sustainability Monitor 2024 report. The Council for Budgetary Responsibility pointed out on Monday (March 31) that Slovakia ranked worst in the EU in the sustainability of public finances indicator S1, which equals 6.5 percent of GDP in Slovakia. Kamenicky underlined that this is only a partial fact from a comprehensive document, which contains also other important assessments. "Mostly by virtue of its consolidation, the Slovak Republic recorded the greatest improvement in long-term sustainability out of all EU countries," he said. In the Finance Minister's view, it's also important to point to how Slovakia has found itself at the bottom of the sustainability chart. "What have we been recovering from, what have we inherited? The report clearly proves what we've been saying nonstop, namely that we inherited public finances in a catastrophic state. We're trying to improve them and that's what the report acknowledges as well," emphasized Kamenicky. mf
