Bratislava, April 2 (TASR) - Checks by Austrian vets assisted by the police may take place near former border crossings with Austria, TASR was told by spokeswoman for the Police Corps Presidium Martina Slavikova in connection with measures concerning foot-and-mouth disease.
"A ban on the import of animals susceptible to foot-and-mouth disease and animal products from both Hungary and Slovakia has entered into force in Austria," said the spokeswoman, adding that the main concern is meat from animals slaughtered after March 1 this year and their products. "The ban doesn't apply to horses, chickens, ducks or domestic animals," she added.
Vets can stop drivers when they enter Austria, check the conditions for the legal transport of animals or their products and request the documents needed for inspection, she noted.
