Detva, April 2 (TASR) - The death of a 59-year-old man, found on Sunday night (March 30) in the woods near Detva (Banska Bystrica region) with devastating traumatic injuries, was caused by a bear attack, the Regional Police Directorate in Banska Bystrica confirmed on social media on Wednesday.
"The man had visible injuries on his body, and the preliminary medical report confirmed that he succumbed to the injuries caused by the attack of a wild animal," the police stated.
The man had been missing since Sunday afternoon (March 30). The attack took place about a kilometre away from an urban area in the woods, outside of protected zones.
In response to the incident, the government at its session on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in several districts of the country in response to the bear situation. It also approved the culling of 350 brown bears based on a report by State Nature Conservation (SOP).
