Lucia L. Sentenced to 17 Years for Murder of New-born Baby

Zilina, April 4 (TASR) - Zilina District Court on Friday ruled on the case of the death of a new-born baby in Rajec last year, finding 26-year-old Lucia L. guilty of murder and sentencing her to 17 years in prison. The verdict isn't final, as both parties have the right to appeal against it within the legal period. The tragedy occurred in Rajec on June 15, 2024, when the body of a newly born child was found by a passerby in a drainage ditch near one of the apartment buildings. Emergency services were called to the scene, but they could only confirm the death. Several hours later, the police arrested the woman suspected of the baby's murder. As stated in the verdict, the defendant, Lucia L., spontaneously gave birth to a female child during the 30th week of pregnancy on the day in question and placed her in a drainage ditch. She acted under the influence of methamphetamine. In determining the sentence, the judge mainly took into account the fact that the defendant confessed to the crime and accepted responsibility. She will serve her sentence in a high-security prison and has also been ordered to undergo institutional treatment for drug addiction. lin/df
