Piestany, April 6 (TASR) - At a commemorative ceremony on Friday (April 4), participants marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the town of Piestany in Trnava region and paid tribute to the victims of the Second World War, town spokeswoman Veronika Bardikova told TASR, adding that Piestany and the surrounding villages were liberated just after Easter 1945.
Piestany mayor Peter Jancovic in his speech urged those present not to remain indifferent to expressions of hatred in society at any cost. "Over the years, hatred has been generated in society in various forms and shapes and it is up to us not to remain indifferent when we see injustice being done to someone," he stressed.
"The liberation of Piestany took place in less than three days, from the early evening of April 2 to the morning of April 4, 1945. Most of the villages of Piestany district, including Piestany, were liberated on April 4 in the morning hours," said the spokeswoman.
