Bratislava, April 8 (TASR) - Roma culture and traditions form an integral part of common cultural values ​​in Slovakia, Government Proxy for Ethnic Minorities Akos Horony posted on a social network to mark International Roma Day on Tuesday. Horonoy pointed out that Roma form the second-largest ethnic minority in Slovakia. "Today, on International Roma Day, we celebrate the richness of the Roma culture, traditions and history and set goals to ensure that Roma culture and language develop," he said. Horony mentioned the aim of having the Romani language recognised and respected in all areas of public life. "It's not an easy task, but it is essential for every citizen to feel equal in our country," added the government proxy in his status. As part of promoting and monitoring the application of general ethnic minority language rights, Horony stated that his office has been cooperating with Roma experts for a long time and preparing translations into the Romani language. According to the latest (2021) population census, 67,179 residents declared Roma nationality, making up 1.23 percent of the Slovak population, while 88,986 residents declared Roma as another nationality. A total of 100,526 residents of Slovakia view Romani as their mother tongue. International Roma Day was declared in 1990 to commemorate the first World Roma Congress, which took place in Orpington near London in early April 1971. ko/df
