Brussels, April 8 (TASR) - Education Minister Tomas Drucker (Voice-SD) met European Commission Vice-President for Technical Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Maria Virkkunen in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss Slovakia's plan to systematically integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the education system, TASR has been told by the Education, Research, Development and Youth Ministry's communications department.
According to Drucker, Slovakia sees AI as a tool for modernising education, developing skills and strengthening the digital and civic literacy of pupils and students. AI is useful for helping children to better understand the world, think critically and develop creativity. The Education Ministry wants pupils to learn to use technology safely, ethically and responsibly.
"Artificial intelligence is supposed to help schools and teachers. It should reduce their workload, simplify the preparation of lessons and adapt them to the needs of pupils in the classroom. At the same time, our goal is for every pupil and student to have access to technology, regardless of their background," said Drucker.
The ministry will present a detailed plan for introducing artificial intelligence into the education system this autumn. The plan will include expanding the curricula of primary and secondary schools to include the teaching of AI, both from a technical perspective and with an emphasis on ethical and social contexts. A competency framework for teachers is also being developed, and the role of school digital coordinators will be strengthened to ensure that schools have professional support.
