Bratislava, April 9 (TASR) - The opposition Christian Democrats (KDH) didn't receive sufficient support for their proposal to amend the Slovak Constitution in Wednesday's vote in Parliament.
Out of 141 present, only 25 MPs supported it, 39 were against it and 77 abstained. In its proposal, the party considered it to be crucial to enshrine the principle that cultural and ethical issues shouldn't be part of the transfer of powers to the EU.
KDH proposed that in the areas of protection of life, family law, public morality and personal status, no powers should be delegated to supranational institutions. They called for ensuring that the decisions of European and international courts couldn't affect fundamental ethical and cultural issues which fall exclusively within national competence.
According to the proposal, the Constitution would include a sentence stating that Slovakia's withdrawal from the EU and NATO should require a referendum. KDH also proposed that the Constitution should include a special role for parents in the upbringing and education of their children and in forming their religious and philosophical convictions.
