Premier: EU Needs Honest Debate on Democracy

Bratislava, April 9 (TASR) - The European Union (EU) needs a frank discussion on democracy and on what is happening in Slovakia and Serbia, Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) posted on a social network on Wednesday, noting that he thinks that EU's institutions are lecturing and "lashing with the whip of democracy". "At the same time, they ignore that the West organised a 'Maidan' against the government that was legitimately elected in Georgia, that in Romania and France the favourites for the presidential elections were removed under strange circumstances. There's no need to mention Slovakia. All sorts of strange NGOs funded from Dutch accounts are inventing reasons for protests every week. This issue literally resonated at my meetings with the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly, as well as with the President of India [Droupadi Murmu]," wrote Fico. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is sovereign and doesn't submit to "Western dictates". He is therefore facing anger. Fico further stated that Serbia would join the EU if the Union were fair, adding that the country is ready for this. "However, EU membership has become good material for blackmailing Serbia's democratically elected political representation because of the president's sovereign positions," he thinks. am
