Bratislava, April 10 (TASR) - On the occasion of Daffodil Day on Thursday, President Peter Pellegrini welcomed representatives of the League Against Cancer at the Presidential Palace, thanked them for organising the public fundraiser, expressed his support for the initiative, and contributed to the collection, TASR learnt from the President's Office's communications department on the same day.
"Thanks go to the thousands of young people who have taken to streets, towns and villages across Slovakia to collect as much money as possible, which the League will use to support everyone battling cancer," said Pellegrini. Last year, a record-breaking sum of over €1.2 million was raised.
The president noted that around 40,000 new cancer patients are diagnosed in Slovakia each year. "That's why today belongs to all those who are fighting the disease," he said, wishing them strength and energy. He also extended his thanks to the medical staff who care for these patients.
According to the president, this day is also a time to remember those who lost their battle with the disease. "I'm thinking of my father, who passed away less than a year ago," he added, urging everyone to take care of their health and not to ignore preventive programmes appropriate for their age. "The earlier this serious illness is detected, the greater the chance of survival," he emphasised.
