Bratislava, April 11 (TASR) - Junior governing Slovak National Party (SNS) leader and House Vice-chair Andrej Danko has posted on a social network that he's supporting a petition to declare a referendum on lifting anti-Russian sanctions, doing so in reaction to a call by MEP Milan Uhrik (Republic).
"I am calling on Andrej Danko and the whole of SNS to join us in declaring a referendum on the scrapping of sanctions against Russia. We all know that the Smer-SD party is pursuing a two-faced foreign policy. They tell people in Slovakia one thing, and then vote differently in Brussels," stated Uhrik. He added that since the election his party has been waiting for the government to start keeping its promises and scrap or vote against sanctions at European Council meetings, but this hasn't happened yet.
According to Uhrik, the sanctions have only resulted in price increases, expensive energy and an economic crisis in Europe and Slovakia. He claims that patriotic parties must now put petty disputes aside, join forces and organise a referendum.
Reacting to this, Danko said that Uhrik was right about anti-Russian sanctions. He views the petition calling for the referendum as an excellent idea. "I would like to assure you that SNS is interested in cooperation between all those who support national politics. I'm calling on our members and sympathisers to print out and sign the petition sheet," said the SNS leader.
At the same time, the party submitted a resolution to Parliament, urging the government to act in relation to anti-Russian sanctions and for Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) to block them.
