Bratislava, April 18 (TASR) - A nationwide celebration marking the end of WWII will take place at Piestany Airport on May 8, the Defence Ministry announced on social media on Friday.
The event will feature a history lecture and period demonstrations of ground and aerial battles. The current Slovak armed forces are also slated to engage in a presentation. The organisers will provide more detailed information about the programme later.
As for the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism, Slovak National Uprising participant and war veteran Vladimir Strmen has stressed that peace must be protected because it was hard won.
"War is bad, war is the greatest evil. The horrors that we experienced during World War Two. No one was sure whether they would live to see dinner or, in the evening, whether they would live to see the morning. Every family was missing a father, son or daughter who fell in the battles for the liberation of our homeland," said Strmen in a video on social media.
