Slovaks Commemorate Suffering and Death of Jesus on Good Friday

Bratislava, April 18 (TASR) - The suffering and death of Jesus Christ is commemorated on Good Friday by believers in Slovakia, along with Christians all over the world. Christ's followers observe the day when, according to the Bible, God's Son suffered and died for the sins of man in order to become the people's saviour and bring them the prospect of eternal salvation. In Catholic churches, according to an old tradition, no mass is held but a special service takes place. During this service, the Passions (the chronicle of Jesus' suffering) are read out or sung. The faithful also pray for the Church, the pope, bishops, priests, those who suffer, and for all people, including those who do not believe. In Evangelical cathedrals, special services take place throughout the day that include the singing of the Passions and celebrations commemorating the Last Supper. Priests and the faithful ponder the hope and certainty that was entrusted in mankind by Jesus Christ, through his patient bearing of his tortuous death and later resurrection. mf
